Abstract

Dealing with death is a difficult issue for everyone, especially those who work directly with this
process, in this case, the health team and more specifically the nursing professionals. Therefore, these professionals
must be prepared to face the death process. die that is nothing but a stage of life Objective: Based on the scientific
literature, the purpose of this paper has been to analyze coping strategies by the nursing staff facing death and dying
process of patients in intensive care units. Method: This integrative review used as search resources the electronic
bases LILASC and BDENF of the Virtual Health Library (VHL), and also the following descriptors in eleven different
combinations: Attitude towards Death, Death, ICU and Nursing Team. Results: Fourteen articles could be included in
this study from 83 selected from the bases. This review has revealed that there are seven main coping strategies by
the nursing staff: distancing, denial, religiosity / spirituality, rationalization, death acceptance, crying, and emotional
control. Conclusion: There is a special demand to approach this subject during the training of nursing professionals.
Also, health institutions should provide spaces where staff could discuss their anguish, fears, insecurities, and have
psychological support in coping with the process of death and dying of patients as these professionals often work
under high emotional pressure to save lives. This kind of environment would provide means to alleviate their stress,
and therefore also improve their performance in intensive care units.
