Abstract

This work shows a historical brief summary of the Navy Health System (SSM) and the Marcílio Dias Naval Hospital (HNMD), since their legal foundations, and historical events related to their creation and organization. Remarkable facts have been gathered from Ilha das Cobras in Rio de Janeiro, where the Navy Hospital and Marine Artillery Corps, and the Navy Central Hospital (HCM) were built between fortresses. Here, we report on the creation of a philanthropic entity named as Casa Marcílio Dias in the neighborhood of Lins de Vasconcelos in Rio, and the Naval Institute of Biology built nearby in 1934. In 1955, the SSM was legally created since then with a modern administrative structure. The SSM and the HNMD exerted solid medical-assistance, research and teaching activities throughout the 20th century, but in new facilities inaugurated on February 8, 1980. The HNMD currently represents an internationally recognized military and medical institution of unparalleled importance for medicine in Brazil.
