Abstract

COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) pandemic announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 2020 has caused a series of challenges to science and the healthcare system. Demographic and clinical risk factors are of utmost importance for better understanding the disease and for developing specific clinical measurements for patients with COVID-19. The present study characterizes the clinical-epidemiological profile of patients with COVID-19 treated at the Hospital Naval Marcílio Dias (HNMD), in 2020. Our population comprised military personnel and their dependents, treated at the HNMD, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Infection diagnosis was carried out through Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction in real time (RT-qPCR) using SARS-CoV-2 genes as targets. Patient information was collected using the HNMD electronic medical record system, and it was possible to survey the medical records of 513 patients. Our population was composed by 55.6% male patients and 44.4% female, with a hospitalization rate of approximately 72%. We observed a significant increase in the chance of patients with severe or critical condition to die when compared to mild and moderate cases. Moreover, we also evidenced a higher chance of patients with more severe diseases to require mechanical ventilation. Our analyses showed an increased chance of patients who used mechanical ventilation to die in comparison with those who did not use ventilatory support. These results contribute to a better understanding of the disease within the population studied.
