aspectos químicos, farmacológicos e de eficácia e segurança para uso como medicamento
Abstract
The Prussian Blue (PA) is a substance used for treatment of patients contaminated with radioactive cesium or thallium. The only effective way to treat radioisotopes contamination is increasing their rate of elimination. PA, orally, is capable of binding to 137Cs in gastrointestinal tract, interrupting it´s enterohepatic circulation and accelerating its elimination in feces. By having an enterohepatic circulation similar to the 137Cs, Thallium poisoning may also be treated with this drug. Although understudied, this effect has been reported since 1960. This study deals with a review of data from the 46 patients treated with PA during Goiânia radiological incident, as well as additional data from 19 patients and 7 volunteers, not related to the accident in Goiânia, and still 34 patients poisoned with thallium, demonstrating the effectiveness and safety of use of this substance as a medicine.
