Comparative study between cytological alteration results in colpocytology and its histological correspondent.

Abstract

Objectives: Our aim was to evaluate the correlation between cytological results in the Pathology Service of Hospital Naval Marcílio Dias, from patients of the Gynecology Clinic in the years 2011, 2012 and 2013, and the results of atypical cells (according to the Brazilian Nomenclature for Reporting Cervical Cytopathology, Instituto Nacional de Câncer José de Alencar published in 2012) that may have its corresponding histopathology, determining the diagnostic accuracy of cytological results by calculating the Positive Predictive Value (PPV). Methods: 4,271 Pap smear results were analyzed in the years 2011-2013 Results: A total of 155 (3.63%) tests had abnormal results, outside the normal range, of these, 61 (1.42%) cytological results had its corresponding histopathology. In the Pathology Lab of Hospital Naval Marcílio Dias we observed a PPV of 81,8% (considering abnormal results of LSIL until invasive squamous cell carcinoma). Discussion and Conclusion: The continuous practice of quality assurance by monitoring the lab results is a simple and inexpensive tool that helps to enhance the clinical and laboratory relationship, which ultimately means higher reliability in the reports and especially better treatment for patients.
