A The Battle of the Atlantic on the Coast of Bahia (1942-1945)
Abstract
In the South of the Atlantic Ocean, histories and memories of the Second World War period still remain submerged. It is urgent to bring them to the surface for the general public to know them, dignifying the allies’ efforts against the U-boats. Within the combatants’ individual and collective narratives, for example, we can notice various naval facts in the coast of Bahia, in Brazilian eastern region. This way, it is possible to establish connections between the militarized world and the society of Bahia state. From a regional to a national scale, Brazilian History needs to embrace the belligerent operations in Africa and in the South Atlantic, so it can broaden its frame of references outside Europe. This paper, therefore, aims at highlighting the U-boats war in the coast of Bahia, inside the Brazilian Eastern Naval Command (“Comando Naval do Leste”) area. By means of historical sources and literature review, it was possible to design a belligerent scenario in South America, the last frontier of the Battle of the Atlantic.
