Um A vital convoy in South Atlantic
aspects of the history of the Convoy AS-4 and its passage through Recife
Abstract
We seek to bring the history of the Convoy AS-4 from its departure in New York to the passage of the escort to the British near Ascension Island, especially the occurrences during the refueling stop in Recife. This is a work related to the Battle of the Atlantic, more particularly about the participation of the South Atlantic Force of the U.S. Navy and the military bases and facilities in Brazilian territory. As Axis forces advanced through the North African desert, with British defeat looming, the United States came to the rescue of its ally. The need was armored tanks. Without hesitation Roosevelt offered 300 M4 Sherman tanks to the English. This is the context in which the Convoy AS-4 appears.
