Abstract

You could say that D. João faced a number of difficulties in family life and subsequent turmoil in the political sphere. If there is agreement by all authors, who relied on the testimony of those who knew him closely, as to its goodness and kindness, all the rest is controversial. While some pointed to his vision of a statesman, others considered him a coward and wholly unprepared to govern. Anyway, D. João VI left its indelible mark Luso-Brazilian history, a fact that resonates to the present, through a historiography that insists on judging the King, ignoring the continuous transformations, which experienced over the course of the twentieth century.
