Storming of Cayenne
its significance for the History of the Marine Corps
Abstract
This paper aims to discuss aspects of the organization of the Royal Navy Brigade in 1808 and 1809 as well as highlighting the importance of Cayenne Taking in the history of the Marine Corps. For better understanding, this presentation was organized into nine topics. First, as introduction, it is discussed the historical background of the Cayenne Taking, focusing in the European context in the late of the eighteenth century. Next, we attempt to the transmigration of the Royal Family to Brazil and the declaration of war on France and its possessions. After, the article approaches the expedition to Cayenne, undertaken by the government of the Province of Grão-Pará, and the subsequent remittance of naval forces from Rio de Janeiro with the participation of the Royal Navy Brigade. Next, it is discussed the permits that regulated between 1797 and 1808, for finally talking about new researchs about the subject and the celebrations of 200 years of the Cayenne Taking, followed by a brief conclusion.
