Abstract

This paper examines the intricate construction of Portuguese foreign policy concerning Cayenne, and the meaning of its political achievement at the time. For D. Rodrigo de Souza Coutinho such achievement could mean an extension of the limits of the Portuguese-Brazilian Empire. However, for other politicians more interested in the European question, this was only a temporary victory, intended as such since the beginning of the Guiana’s administration.
