Abstract

Lord Cochrane was a Scottish admiral who became famous for his actions during the napoleonic wars. He was later contracted by Chilean and Peruvian patriots to help fight Spain in their independence wars. D. Pedro I hired his services to organize the Brazilian War Navy, and he was very effective in fighting the rebellions in Bahia, Maranhão and Pará. Cochrane later stole all Maranhão’s treasury, considering himself not well paid for his services. Cochrane was made Marquis of Maranhão, a title highlighted in his tomb at Westminster Abbey in London.
