Abstract

The Santos Navy Yard (founded by Capitão-General Morgado de Mateus) began as a good way of sending wood to Lisbon Navy Yard. This was part of the “naval revolution”, an action created by D. José I but only accomplished by First Minister Marquês de Pombal. In Port of Santos the Navy Shipyard developed and in 1801 four saveiros boat were built. Those ships were firstly used as transportation but could be turn into gunboats. However, in the Independency period, the Santos Navy Shipyard was rebuild and expanded. With this growth four more gunboats or schooners were built and were used in a brutal way in the Uruguayan Independence War (Guerra da Cisplatina 1825/1828).
